Today’s digital infrastructure now operates as a single, tightly coupled system in which telecom networks, data centers, and energy assets directly shape one another’s capacity, resilience, and economics. As 5G/6G rollouts and AI-driven workloads continue to increase, the ability to deliver low-latency, high-performance compute increasingly depends on reliable power and high-speed connectivity working in lockstep. To avoid bottlenecks, all three domains must deliberately expand capacity in a coordinated way, ensuring that network bandwidth, compute density, and available power grow together rather than limiting constraints for one another. This is easier said than done.

Heightened Data Center Buildout

Driven by AI training, streaming content, cloud computing, and IoT, hyperscalers such as AWS, Google, and Microsoft are accelerating construction of multi-hundred megawatt “mega campuses,” with some U.S. projects planned around 500 MW of capacity built in phases over many years. These large campuses cluster in regions that can offer ample and relatively affordable power, favorable tax incentives, sizable land parcels, and, importantly, sufficient water resources for cooling. Some of the top such regions include Santa Clara County, California (1.8M population), Maricopa County, Arizona (4.6M population), and across Northern Virginia (2.6M population), the most densely populated part of the Washington DC metro area, and one of the largest and fastest growing residential areas in the US. Enabling this are the smaller, distributed data centers built closer to users, otherwise known as Edge data centers, which play a critical role in the low latency of 5G/6G and autonomous systems.

In an interesting shift, telecommunications carriers are repurposing old commercial offices or switching facilities into “mini” data centers to serve edge workloads. This allows these telecom companies to leverage their vast real estate holdings to create edge computing centers—as in the case of Verizon’s AI strategy. AI hardware is also driving rack power densities, which have increased from ~10 kW to 40–100 kW, changing cooling and facility design requirements.

All of this is leading to the fact that by 2030, data centers are expected to demand 9% of U.S. power—up from around 2% today, according to EPRI.

Energy Source Challenges

Energy availability, not land or fiber availability, is the primary bottleneck limiting new data center sites. This has led to grid constraints, driving densely populated regions like Northern Virginia, Dublin, and Singapore to impose moratoriums or delays.

The rise in on-site solar, wind PPAs (Power Purchase Agreements), and battery storage has helped offset grid dependency. Solar accounted for the largest share of new capacity in 2024, at 58%, followed by battery storage, at 23%, according to USEIA. Future sites are now exploring hybrid power sources—microgrids, hydrogen fuel cells, and small modular reactors (SMRs)—to reinforce more reliable and sustainable energy sources. This has also given rise to emerging key infrastructure layers for energy management, which include platforms and solutions that throttle workloads, reroute processing, or dynamically coordinate power usage while scaling.

Telecom’s Role in the Data Center Ecosystem

Telecommunications operators sit at the core of the internet’s physical fabric, operating much of the terrestrial and subsea fiber and backhaul that tie together hyperscale campuses, regional data centers, edge nodes, and billions of endpoints worldwide. By extending compute into their networks through multi-access edge computing and telco edge data centers colocated at towers, central offices, and legacy sites, carriers can host 5G/6G network functions and low-latency workloads directly in the network, blurring the line between connectivity provider and distributed data center operator.

To support this shift, telcos are layering IoT, telemetry, and remote management across their networks, enabling unified monitoring and control of infrastructure that increasingly spans towers, transport, edge compute, and even energy assets such as onsite backup and renewables. This evolution is pushing operators from pure bandwidth wholesalers to full-stack digital infrastructure platforms that bundle connectivity, compute, and value-added services for hyperscalers, enterprises, and governments.

Industry analysts suggest this backbone position gives telcos a pivotal role in the AI era, with opportunities ranging from offering network-aware AI infrastructure and edge GPU capacity to exposing network APIs and intelligent routing for latency-sensitive AI workloads. Capturing this upside will require navigating intense competition and large capital and operating model shifts. It is to be seen if telecommunications operators will fully embrace the necessary investment since “success will hinge on effectively navigating complex market dynamics, uncertain demand, and rising competition,” based on a McKinsey Report.

The Energy–Telecom Interlock

As hyperscale campuses and dense 5G/6G networks expand, telecom and data center infrastructure are starting to look less like passive “electricity customers” and more like large, orchestrated grid assets whose behavior directly affects regional reliability and pricing. Both sectors are rapidly adding backup generation, battery energy storage, and onsite renewables, enabling them to ride through outages, shave peaks, and increasingly offer load flexibility to strained power systems.

This is prompting closer coordination between operators and utilities, with large campuses and distributed cell-site fleets being treated as potential “flexible loads” that can curtail, shift, or reschedule portions of their demand in response to grid needs, sometimes in exchange for financial incentives or priority interconnection. At the same time, utilities are beginning to view high bandwidth 5G connectivity as critical for monitoring and controlling distributed energy resources at scale, tying telecom and power system planning more tightly together than ever before.

The emergence of projects pairing advanced nuclear or large-scale renewables directly with AI campuses underscores how deeply intertwined energy planning, digital infrastructure, and telecom connectivity have become, with power purchase decisions now driving site selection and long-term network topology.

Convergence and Co-Location

The next wave of buildout is already moving toward integrated campuses where data centers, clean energy production (solar, wind, hydrogen, advanced nuclear), and telecom edge nodes are planned as a single system rather than separate projects. The U.S. Department of Energy’s move to identify 16 federal sites as candidates for AI and data center infrastructure underscores how location decisions are increasingly being made at the intersection of power availability, network reach, and proximity to end users.

As AI workloads scale, operators will need platforms that can continuously orchestrate where workloads run, how power is sourced, and which network paths are used—while exposing real-time views into carbon intensity per bit or per computation to meet investor, customer (via SLA requirements), and increasing global regulatory expectations. This requires unifying environmental, energy, and operational metrics across data centers, telecom networks, and on-site generation into living “digital twins” that make tradeoffs and bottlenecks foreseeable and controllable.

With the global AI data center market projected to approach one trillion dollars by 2030, the winners will not simply be those that build the most facilities or light up the most fiber, but those that can treat compute, connectivity, and clean energy as one coordinated fabric. Organizations that deploy cross-domain digital twin platforms to optimize this fabric in real time will be best positioned to deliver reliable performance, keep energy and carbon in check, and unlock new revenue models in the decade ahead.
